Catholic Women’s Prayer Breakfast Set for Portland on May 19; Susan Conroy to Serve as Keynote Speaker

Event Sold Out in 2017

PORTLAND---All Catholic women, as well as women who have lost touch with the Church, are invited to gather for an inspiring celebration of faith and community in Portland on Saturday, May 19.

The Magnificat Ministry Catholic Women’s Prayer Breakfast will be held at the Fireside Inn & Suites, located on 81 Riverside Street, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event, hosted by the Scarborough chapter of Magnificat, sold out in 2017 and included a lengthy waiting list. Magnificat is an international ministry with over 90 chapters worldwide that aims to help Catholic women become more committed to Jesus by fostering a desire to grow in holiness. The Scarborough chapter, the first in Maine, became an official chapter in November of 2016.

The keynote speaker at the breakfast will be respected author and EWTN host Susan Conroy, a native of South Portland who developed a friendship with Saint Teresa of Calcutta that lasted for years. Conroy made her first trip to Calcutta to work with the Missionaries of Charity in 1986, and her experiences are chronicled in her first book Mother Teresa’s Lessons of Love & Secrets of Sanctity, which was written with Saint Teresa’s own blessing and approval. She went on to write eight other books and has served as a host for EWTN programs, including a miniseries entitled “Coming to Christ,” which was filmed on the coast of Maine and in view of Mount Katahdin.

The theme of Conroy’s presentation at the prayer breakfast will center on Our Blessed Mother Mary and why she is the perfect role model for women on earth as she continues to instruct from heaven.

“The breakfast invites women to come together and pray, to ask for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, for those graces, so they can leave with a sense of renewal, and purpose, and stronger in their faith than when they walked through the door,” said Catherine Koenig, secretary of the Scarborough chapter.

“It really is an outreach to just draw people in,” said Cynthia Nickless, executive director of The Presence Radio Network and a Magnificat member. “This gives us an opportunity to show the beauty of the Church to not only our own members but outside as well.”

Tickets for the breakfast are $22 per person. For reservations, call (207) 838-8309 or email magnificatscarborough@gmail.com. No tickets will be sold at the door.
